Susan Marie Bale passed away peacefully on October 9, 2026, in Herriman, Utah, after courageously battling a chronic lung disease. She leaves behind a life full of service, faith, learning, and love for the living world.
Born in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Hal and Cornella Hancock. She is the oldest of nine children. Susan built a life marked by dedication and steady purpose. She is remembered by her husband, Bruce Bale; her children, Nathan (Deb), Tony (Shaina), Monica (David), and Janalyn (Trevor); 11 grandchildren; and 3 great-grandchildren as well as her mother, Cornella, siblings, Art (Karla), Colette (Ron), Aaron (Teresa), Lisa (Cory), John (Pam), Doug (Rhonda), Jody (Jared), She was preceded in death by her father, Hal Hancock, and her sister, Ann Hancock Stephenson.
Susan has been fascinated by all kinds of new life since she was young. She enjoyed the beauty of nature, plants, and animals - especially horses. Through 4H, performance drill team, competitive trail rides, and riding lessons, she shared those passions with countless individuals. Her dogs, Cayes and Rocky, were especially loved, as they brought support and comfort to many kids and adults. Susan was talented in music, poetry, and art. Many of her talented pieces are priceless treasures among her friends and family.
Susan’s commitment to education remained a constant source of pride throughout her life. She completed her nursing degrees from Salt Lake Community College, Weber State University, and University of Phoenix. Even in the final weeks of her life, she completed the continuing education credits needed to renew her nursing license, though she could no longer work as a nurse.
For more than 30 years, Susan worked as a Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse in Neuro Rehab at Intermountain Health, sharing her knowledge and care with patients and caregivers alike. Her spirit of service also reached beyond home through Healing Hands for Haiti, where she served as a committee member and traveled 15 times to provide humanitarian aid.
Susan’s family would like to thank Dr. Peter Crossno and the numerous medical professionals at Intermountain Health that Susan had the pleasure to work with in her nursing career. Those same colleagues then treated her with the utmost respect and dignity once she became their patient.
Her faith was a joyful and steady part of her life. Susan was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many church callings. Pioneer Trek and as Girls Camp Director were among her favorite activities. She attended the temple weekly with her sister, Colette, until just days before her passing, completing ordinances by proxy for hundreds of ancestors.
