Steven Karl Jones, beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and friend, passed away on October 21, 2026 at the age of 81. He will be remembered for his steadfast faith, his devotion to his family, and the profound and enduring influence he had on those around him.
Steve was born December 19, 1944 to Charles Elvin and Helen Clawson Jones in Murray, Utah. He grew up in Murray and graduated from Granite High School in 1963. He kept busy in high school, serving as senior class president and participating in football, basketball, golf, choir, debate, math club, and the National Honor Society.
Steve enlisted in an airborne unit of the Utah National Guard during his senior year of high school. After graduating in 1963, he left for basic training at Fort Ord, California, and completed parachute training at Fort Benning, Georgia.
From 1964 to 1966, Steve served a mission in France. It was a formative time for him that helped shape the course of his life. He gained a zeal for spiritual knowledge and an upward reach that never diminished.
Steve married Ann Baker on August 30, 1967 in the Salt Lake Temple. Ann was his beloved wife and companion for forty-four years. They had six children and shared many wonderful years together, until her passing in 2011. In the years that followed, Steve was blessed to find love and companionship again with Judy Penrod, whom he married in 2016 and who remained by his side through the final chapter of his life.
Steve was always a teacher. He began his career teaching seminary but soon discovered a gift for using media to teach, which led him into a role as a film and video producer for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He had a deep desire to use media to inspire students to read and understand the scriptures. Along the way he also became a talented songwriter. Many people gained a greater appreciation for the word of God through Steve’s music and media.
Nothing pleased Steve more than having his family gathered around him. He loved backpacking with his children and grandchildren, attending their concerts, sporting events, and plays, and sharing stories and life lessons with them. If you ever mowed Steve’s lawn, you probably know the story of the five-dollar lawn job. It was hard to spend time with Steve without coming away with a new insight, a story, or something to think about.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ann; his son, Matthew; his brother, Robert Jones; and his sisters, Geraldine (Bill) Bond, Marjorie (Norm) Turner, and Sharilyn Jones. He is survived by his wife, Judy; his sister, Patricia Bond; five children, Todd (Melissa) Jones, Anissa (Rob) Wall, Mike (Shauna) Jones, Aaron (Kristin) Jones, and Ryan (Malissa) Jones; nineteen grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. at the meetinghouse at 1465 W. Tamarack Road, Taylorsville, Utah. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 p.m., with interment at Elysian Burial Gardens.
