Margaret Hutchings Slack

July 29, 1926 — March 30, 2024

Draper

Margaret Hutchings Slack, 97, passed away March 30, 2024, in Draper, Utah, surrounded by
her children.

She was born July 29, 1926, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, to mother Mellie Grace Kinghorn and father
Marion Price Hutchings. In her early years she lived in Idaho. When she was four years old her
family moved to Lund, Nevada, where her father was the founding principal of the high school.

When Margaret was 11, her family returned to Idaho Falls and then later moved to Pocatello,
where she was a 1944 graduate of Pocatello High School. She attended the University of
Idaho-Southern Branch before transferring the next year to Brigham Young University as an art
major. When attending a Spanish class, she met the love of her life, Lawrence (Larry) Slack,
who had recently returned from service in the Army Air Corps during World War II. They were
married in the Idaho Falls Temple on September 3, 1946.

She was the mother of seven talented and successful children: Susan was a music educator
and performer; Barbara was an accomplished cellist and educator; Tom continues to be a
professional artist; Mary created a successful craft company; Chuck was a manager at
Sanmina Corporation and raised 11 children; Larraine created a Website that helped readers
manage their Celiac Disease; and Marty spent 30 years as a firefighter/paramedic and
Assistant Fire Chief. Margaret also considered her children’s spouses as her own children:
Todd Fiegel (Susan); Reid Fullmer (Barbara); Norene Slack (Tom); Cindy Slack (Chuck); Brian
McCrea (Larraine); Aubry Rushton (Marty).

All Margaret’s life she enjoyed working in her church. She was Ward Relief Society President
twice, Stake Relief Society President, and in three different stakes, Stake Relief Society
Counselor. She taught Gospel Doctrine classes for many years. She served as an Ordinance
Worker at the Jordan River Temple for 9 years.

She worked for years as a journalist for the Green Sheet newspaper, then later as a secretary
for the Prowswood Corporation. She loved sports, both as spectator and player. She played
women’s team sports with her ward, and frequently could be seen outside teaching her kids
and grandkids how to play catch. She had season tickets to BYU football games and cheered
on BYU basketball and the Utah Jazz from the time the team first came to Salt Lake City.

Margaret’s beloved Larry passed away at the age of 67 in 1991, and her youngest daughter,
Larraine, died at the age of 54 in 2015. Margaret felt very blessed to have had her 7 children as
well as a large posterity of 37 grandchildren, 113 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-
grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and daughter, Margaret was preceded in death by her parents,
siblings LaVere Hutchings, Grace Karstad, Josephine McCall, and Tom Hutchings, great-
grandson Ford Hervey, and great-granddaughter Rachel Torgerson,

The family wants to express their gratitude to the staff and residents of Ashford Assisted Living
