Leland Brent Piep

Born in Salt Lake City to Robert (Bob) and Velma Woodbury Piep, he spent his formative years blocks from Jordan Park. He graduated from South High School, excelling in multiple sports, especially football. He went on to attend Snow College. During this time he met the love of his life, Julie Ann Warren. They were married on 28 January 1966. The Vietnam War interrupted, and after joining the National Guard, he left for training on the East Coast. It was while in training he learned of the birth of his eldest. Brent worked several years at Roy Price Chevrolet (later Tony Price). It was while working here that he traded in his Camaro for a green pick-up (it is doubtful Julie ever forgave him for this). As a heavy equipment mechanic, he worked for a number of different companies, until back injuries forced him into a more sedated profession and he eventually retired from DMBA. Brent was active as an adult in the Boy Scouts first as a Scoutmaster, later at the district level, and as merit badge counselor for many scouts. He said many times one of his regrets was not earning his Eagle, but was proud that both sons and most of his Grandsons achieved this rank. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and many outdoor activities. After his hair and beard turned white, a pocket full of mini candy canes went with him. No matter where he went, young children would come up to “Santa''. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints he held a number of responsibilities in the local congregation. He was sealed to his beloved Julie in the Salt Lake temple 24 March 1977. He is survived by his son Michael, daughters Teresea Staley and Kristina DeGraw, 5 grandsons Devin Staley, Jacob DeGraw, Thomas DeGraw, Alex DeGraw and Bryce Staley, 2 granddaughters Kayla (Tyler) West and Elizabeth DeGraw, with 2 great-granddaughters on the way, daughter-in-law Stacy Piep (Norman), a brother Bob, sisters Beverly (Terry) Walton, Cindy (Earl) Van De Graaff, Kathy (Mark), Rebecca Jorgensen (John), and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his wife, Julie, son, Norman, son-in-law Kevin Staley, his parents, and one sister. A viewing will be held February 27 between 6 and 8 pm and February 28 between 10 and 10:45 am, services will be February 28 at 11 am. At the Orchard 8th Ward chapel at 55 East 350 North North Salt Lake. Interment will be at the Smithfield City Cemetery at 2:30 pm.
