Listen to Obituary

Our loving dad, son, brother, and grandpa Layne Steven Crabtree passed away peacefully on March 23, 2026 surrounded by his loving family. Layne’s death came due to injuries sustained in a tragic car accident 2 weeks ago. He was born to Stephen and Annette Crabtree on March 10, 1975 in Salt Lake City, UT. He is survived by his 5 children, Whitley (Levi) Trujillo, Britley, Victoria, Tyler and Peter; his mother Annette; his grandson Carter; and siblings Wayne, Shane (Traci), Duane (Elissa), Roger Davis, Suseann (Billy) Meaders, Mariann (Jared) Lamoreaux, and Laurann (Derek) Wilkey. He was preceded in death by his wife Crystal, his father Stephen, and his siblings Roseann Davis and Blane Crabtree.

Layne grew up in Taylorsville, Utah and graduated from Taylorsville High School in 1993. He served a mission for Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Richmond, Virginia mission. He loved his missionary service and had some amazing experiences serving the community and teaching others about the love of Jesus Christ. Shortly after his mission he met and then married his beautiful wife and companion Crystal Johansen on June 13, 1997 in the Salt Lake Temple.

Layne lived a life focused around family, faith, service, and sports. He gave his life serving his family with all his heart. He taught them to love each other and lean on each other during difficult times. His children have many fond memories of backyard campfires and big celebrations for their birthdays and holidays. Layne always went over the top to spoil his kids even if it meant going broke in the process. Layne loved watching sports and was an avid BYU and Seattle Seahawks fan. He was so thrilled when the Seahawks won the Super Bowl this year.

Layne loved his Savior Jesus Christ and was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He enjoyed opportunities to serve in the church and faithfully served in every calling he had. He has served in the bishopric, elders quorum and in young men’s and lifted others everywhere he served.

Layne loved working and he was so passionate and loyal to his employers and made lifelong friends everywhere he went. One of his favorite jobs was at Winder Farms where he was a delivery driver for many years. It is incredible to hear the stories of connection and friendships he built as a milkman even though he left more than 10 years ago. Those on his route weren’t just customers to him, they became some of his closest friends and he considered them family. Layne spent much of his career in warehouse management, shipping/receiving and as a delivery driver. He loved his time at Goodman Distribution for several years, along with his time spent at Aspen Press, Odwalla, Milgard Windows and Publishers Press. He also instantly made an impact at Original Way Crystals where he just started December, but he was greatly loved by those he met just a few months ago.

Layne was the most caring, compassionate and giving person you could ever meet. He would willingly give the shirt off his back or money he didn’t have to anyone in need. He gave freely of his time, putting everyone’s needs ahead of his own. He would often visit friends in need to offer comfort, and encourage them not to give up when times were hard. Layne, we will miss you so much and we love you deeply and look forward to seeing you again.
