Larry Dell Nelson, 91, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026, at his home in Ogden, Utah. A man of deep faith, strength, and cowboy spirit, he lived a life rich in purpose and love.
Larry was born on May 14, 1935, in Cedarview, Utah, to Max and Nola Nelson. At home in the saddle as much as anywhere, he had a lifelong love of the Uintah Mountains and horses, and fancied himself a true cowboy — a spirit that never left him. He dedicated countless hours of faithful service to his church, his family, his friends, and his neighbors. Above all else, he loved and treasured his immediate and extended family with his whole heart.
Larry met the love of his life, Mildred LaRae, in Southern California, and after a quick courtship, the two were married and later sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple. Together, they built a life and family over 59 eventful years. After LaRae's passing, he found companionship again in Enid Brown Velasquez, whom he married and who brought joy to his later years.
A craftsman at heart, Larry was a master carpenter who spent a lifetime honing his skill in woodworking. He also had a passion for leatherworking, and his home stood as a testament to his talent — filled with beautiful, handcrafted pieces he had created with his own hands. Those who knew him well knew that his craftsmanship was an extension of the care and dedication he brought to everything he did.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Max and Nola Nelson; his beloved wife, LaRae Nelson; six of his siblings; his son, Glen Nelson; his granddaughter, Elizabeth Nelson; and Enid Brown Velasquez.
He is survived by his siblings Ina Shaw (A.D.) and Penny Shaw; his sister-in-law, Joanne Nelson; and his children Paul Nelson (Kathy), Diane Pace (Lee), and Karalee Nelson (Brett). He was the proud grandfather of 16 grandchildren and 21 great- grandchildren, each one a testament to the love he poured into his family throughout his life.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2026, from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm at 4955 Adams Avenue, Ogden, Utah.
Our family extends our profound appreciation to the wonderful care by Applegate Homecare and Hospice. We are also thankful to his friends at Chuck-a-Rama in Ogden for over 30 years.
