On Friday, September 1, 2023, our loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Joan Mikesell Smith, returned to her heavenly home. Her adoring husband, Larry, was with her every single step of the way and we are humbled by his enduring care for her and strength. It broke our hearts to let her go, but we are forever grateful to be a part of her legacy.
Joan was born September 19, 1940 in Morgan, Utah to John Leon Mikesell and Ida Elizabeth Mikesell. She grew up in Morgan, Layton and later Farmington, Utah where she met and married the love of her life, Larry Glen Smith in the Salt Lake temple on August 22, 1957.
A passionate crafter, Joan loved to create many works of art as she enjoyed crocheting, embroidery, cross-stitch, sewing, quilting, tole-painting, and scrapbooking. In later years, she spent many, many hours doing genealogy research and creating family albums to share. Joan was also a great cook the smell of baking bread could often be smelled from the sidewalk as the kids came home from school. Her divinity candy was always a special treat during the holidays. She taught her children the skill and value of gardening and canning.
A sincere love for the Lord and a strong testimony helped her in her many church callings and well as her time as Relief Society President. Her kind, caring love for her family, friends, and neighbors was constant and sincere. She was proud of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and was always so excited and happy to have them around.
Joan is survived by her husband, Larry; her son and daughters and their spouses, Larry (Brenda), Bette, Brenda (Merrill), Leslie (Danny), and Angie; fifteen grandchildren and spouses, 33 great grandchildren; sisters Elaine (Tom), Jean (Al, deceased), Pauline (Bob, deceased), Jeri (Mike).
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Wanema (Bob, deceased); niece Johanna Wood; grandson, Larry Wayne Smith; great granddaughter, Taylee Marie Oveson.
