Jeffrey LaVar Weight was born in Salt Lake City on October 8, 1959 to LaVar Paul and Shirlene Buxton Weight. He was the oldest of 4 children and has 3 siblings: Mike, Craig(deceased), and Julie. He grew up in Taylorsville and graduated from Cottonwood High School in 1978. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in the Houston Texas Mission from 1979 - 1981.
He married Hazel in November 1983 in the Salt Lake Temple. Jeff & Hazel moved into their current home as newlyweds in the spring of 1984. Together they raised four children: Amanda, Kyle, Deanna, and David. They now have two sons-in-law Steven Chidester and Travis Aldridge and 7 grandchildren: Brooklyn, Amy, Hailey, Olivia, Boyd, Charles, and Bonnie.
Jeff was a hard worker and worked for Granite School District for 35 years as a custodian at Skyline High, Redwood Elementary, and Carl Sandburg Elementary. He loved kids and liked working in the elementary. He worked with many teenage sweepers and school staff over the course of his employment.
While growing up Jeff would go camping and ride motorcycles with his family. His family did a lot with his grandparents and extended family. He liked to go deer hunting, dutch oven cooking, and being outdoors--especially the mountains. From an early age, Jeff loved everything about guns--target shooting, reloading ammo, collecting, and talking about guns.
He served in various ways in callings with the young men as a leader, scoutmaster, and bishopric counselor. He went on many scout camps and youth activities. He always enjoyed reading the scriptures.
For about a year he participated weekly in Rock Steady Boxing. He was a fighter in many ways. For over eight years, he put up a good fight against a silent and slow progressive disease. Jeff was diagnosed with primary progressive aphasia and frontotemporal degeneration (FTD) which affected his ability to communicate and perform daily tasks.
He passed away peacefully at home in Taylorsville, UT on August 9, 2023 surrounded by family. Many thanks to his children and Atlas Hospice who served him well during his final days.
