It is with both sadness and gratitude for a life well-lived that we announce the passing of Arthur W. North, age 86, after a long battle with a progressive lung disease.
Art was born on November 27, 1938 to Wallace and Wanda Hunt North in Keetley, UT. He was the second born of ten children and is the eldest son. He graduated from West High School and then served in the Army for 2 years in the 35th Engineer Group. It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Joyce, and they were married in the Salt Lake Temple in 1964. They recently celebrated 61 years together.
Art was employed for 24 years as a rate clerk at P.I.E. Trucking Company. He also achieved his license to become a general contractor and operated his own construction business. During his life he built 10 houses, 3 of which served as a residence for his own family. He completed countless construction projects in homes throughout Northern Utah. Art found great joy in working with his hands and took great care to ensure every task was completed properly. In what were supposed to be his retirement years, he was brought on as project manager at Tall Oaks, a beautiful gated community, to oversee improvement projects—though he consistently chose to join in the hands-on work. Art developed lasting bonds with clients who valued both his craftsmanship and his pleasant, outgoing nature. He also freely shared his knowledge and skills with neighbors, friends, and family. Despite health challenges that ended his ability to work physically, he found new purpose in writing, completing three books including his autobiography.
Art was a faithful and active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He served as a counselor in his ward’s bishopric, served with his wife in an inner city mission, fulfilled 2 missions at the Bishop’s Storehouse and held many other church callings. He enjoyed the fellowship and friendships he made as he served together with ward members.
He is survived by his wife Joyce, his children Gary (Jody) of Gilbert, AZ, Shelly (Chezlyn) Thomas of West Valley City, UT, and Brent (Kimberly) of Victorville, CA; grandchildren Allie (Nate) Keane, Brendan Kelley, Cameron North, Katrena (Peydun) VanHoff, Shayla (Triston) Smith, Caleb North, Kyndra Thomas, Ava North, Nolan North, and Hudson North; great-grandchildren Grey and Scarlett Keane, and Oren VanHoff; siblings Shurman, Sheila Shakeri, Lamar, Bonnie Malcom and Randy. He is preceded in death by siblings Linda Mitchell, Lavar, Lloyd, Ronald and grandchild Braxton.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 9th at 12 noon at the Harvest Park Ward – 3671 S. Oldham Street (4180 West), West Valley City, UT. A viewing will be held prior to the funeral services from 10:30 to 11:45 AM. Interment will be at Valley View Memorial Park.
